The Chairman of the BBC Trust, Lord Patten, has begun the search for the next Director General.  He has apparently made it clear he expects the next DG to earn substantially less than Mark Thompson's current remuneration - a salary of about £670,000 plus additions that brought Thompson's total pay package to £834,000 in 2010.

Is Patten right to want a less expensive DG?  How much should the successful candidate earn for running the BBC?
