I'm just an ex BBC  wireless person. Could someone with TV background explain to me the purpose of the big white strip down the left hand side of the TV picture when the news reader is in picture?   I keep thinking there's a fault with my TV.  Mind you, the content is now so off my horizon that I don't watch much any more.
